According to the annual report of German Heating and Ventilation Industry Association (BDH) in 2023, the sales volume of gas boilers increased sharply again last year, reaching a record 790,500 units, up 32% year-on-year. Sales of criticized oil-fired boilers also doubled to 112,500 units. The sales volume of heat pumps specially funded by the government soared to 356,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 51%.
This increase indicates a sharp increase in the demand for alternative fossil fuels. At the same time, the modernization of the whole heating industry has made remarkable progress, and the sales volume of heat source equipment has almost doubled to 1.3 million units. Updating aging heating boilers can reduce about 3 million tons of carbon dioxide only last year.
According to the data of the German Environment Agency, renewable energy accounts for about 18% of the heating market, of which more than three quarters come from wood fuels. However, according to the latest data of BDH, the sales of granular boilers decreased by 57%, leaving only 28,000 units, which was affected by the reduction of solid biomass subsidies in August 2022. Generally speaking, the transformation of the heating industry is developing in a more environmentally friendly and sustainable direction.
