Establish a European data center, close semi-closed-loop e-commerce, and expand application functions … What big moves has TikTok made recently?

According to foreign media reports, in order to meet the EU regulatory requirements, TikTok’s European user data will be stored in the company’s first data center in Europe.

The company confirmed that the first data center has been put into operation and user data is being migrated to new equipment. At the same time, TikTok also confirmed in March that it will build two new data centers in Europe: the second data center in Dublin and the third data center in Hamar, Norway. It is reported that these two data centers will use 100% renewable energy.

In addition, TikToK is working with NCOSroup to audit data control and protection and ensure that only authorized personnel can access the system. This move shows its commitment to protecting user data and complying with specifications.

From September 12th, TikTok Store will open the “full closed loop” mode, which means that businesses wishing to benefit from TikTok’s huge user base and powerful algorithms will have to sell directly in TikTok Store. TikTok will no longer attract traffic for sellers’ independent websites or other external e-commerce platforms.

This move is to make TikTok an end-to-end business platform. One of the keys is to convert its current semi-closed-loop mode into a full-closed-loop mode, that is, TikTok will own all the traffic it generates. A spokesman for TikTok said: “Our goal is not to promote other e-commerce websites, but to make TikTok a one-stop shop.”

In 2020, TikTok signed an agreement with Canadian e-commerce giant Shopify, allowing Shopify merchants to run and optimize TikTok marketing activities directly from the Shopify panel. Subsequently, in 2021, TikTok and Shopify expanded the scope of cooperation, enabling American and British Shopify sellers with TikTok For Business accounts to synchronize product catalogs and create mini-storefronts on their TikTok profiles.

It is reported that Shopify recently released a new TikTok Shop integrated plug-in to simplify the process of selling products on TikTok Shop. This move is in response to TikTok Shop’s imminent closure of semi-closed mode. The main function of this plug-in is to help merchants easily synchronize their product catalogs and provide a convenient Shopify panel, so that they can easily access their sales data on TikTok Shop. Previously, merchants had to rely on third-party software to transmit information to Shopify, but now this process has become easier.
